Lorde performed Saturday night at Sprint Center. File photo

Oh my Lorde! Look at all these March shows!

And just like that -- it’s March.

Welcome to spring everyone! Admittedly, it’s been the craziest winter for concert announcements that I can ever remember, but now we’re shifting into high gear. Every day we’re getting more and more outdoor concert announcements for Starlight and CrossroadsKC, while at the same time the Uptown, the Midland, the Truman and the Madrid are all firing away on all cylinders -- not to mention the occasional Sprint Center show, like Metallica announcing a show over a year in advance on March 9, 2019.

Here I am still getting used to typing 2018, and meanwhile Lars and Elton John (February 19 at Sprint) have me pecking 2019 on my keyboard.

Let’s talk highlights for March, some of my favorite things are coming through KC this month. Have a look below to see my picks and then check out the full March concert calendar below.

03/03 Lorde/Run the Jewels/Tove Styrke at Sprint Center

I’m a fan of Lorde and I wanted to go to this concert but put off buying tickets. Then, Run The Jewels got added on as support. Thank you Lorde! That sent me to the box office window at Sprint Center in search of seats.

I was lucky to see Lorde on her first time through KC back in 2014 at The Midland. I was beyond impressed at how the 17-year-old commanded the stage. The same goes for Run The Jewels -- I’ve been lucky to see them twice at The Midland, and in this political climate their voice is more than just important, it’s also really damn good. (Also, much love to The Black Panther for having Run The Jewels in the first round of trailers. I’m sure that was a dream come true for Killer Mike.)

03/06 Bully/Melkbelly at recordBar

Click HERE to watch Bully perform on late night TV for Conan

I missed Bully on their most recent trip through the area, a night at The Bottleneck in 2015. Now back on tour in support of their most recent album “Losing” via Sub Pop Records, they’re coming back to KC, this time to the recordBar.

It feels like Bully has been sitting on the cusp for a while, with their brand of sometimes loud, mildly abrasive, woman-fronted indie rock -- the cusp being moving from a small font to a bigger font on a festival poster like Coachella. They call Sub Pop Records home, they’re originally from Nashville and they’ve even played Conan. Maybe this album is the one that sends them on a new trajectory. I’m a fan of female-fronted projects and the music industry needs more of them, so have a look at the video above and hopefully we’ll see you at the show at recordBar.

03/10 Lucero/Jake La Botz at The Granada

Click HERE to watch Lucero slow things down a bit with Nights Like These

Sometimes it just happens. You hear a voice and it sticks with you forever.

Lucero frontman Ben Nichols has one of my favorite voices. His voice is tossed in gravel, whiskey-soaked and has a two pack a day habit and I love it. Fortunately these loud, alt-country, indie rockers are from Memphis and we get to see them once a year or so. They were recently in KC opening up for the sold out Turnpike Troubadours and won over some new fans -- hopefully some of those folks make it to The Granada for the show.

Also, if you’re a fan of The Walking Dead you may recognize Ben Nichols’ voice one of his songs played on the show a few years ago.

03/13 K.D. lang/Grigoryan Brothers at The Uptown

Click HERE to watch K.D. Lang’s performance at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics

At a time when the #metoomovement and “Time’s Up” are ringing through the music and entertainment industry, I can’t imagine the stories that K.D. Lang could share with us. To think of think of the things she’s fought through only to persist with an amazing career filled with great music.

I was lucky to see her on a brisk night at Starlight several years ago alongside Tony Bennett. It was a special night, she’s a force with an incomparable voice. I’m looking forward to her jaw-dropping vocals in a couple weeks at The Uptown.

She’s out on tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her Ingenue album. That being said, I’m guessing she’ll play that entire record, take an intermission to grab a drink and then come back with set of the hits. It should be a night to remember from a voice you’ll never forget.

03/15 Glen Hansard at The Truman

Click HERE to watch Glen Hansard perform a Tiny Desk Concert, we love Tiny Desk Concerts so much

Fanboy. I love the word. Only a few people make me turn into a fanboy and Glen Hansard is certainly one of them. From his time with The Frames to the Swell Season and now as a touring solo artist, everything he does is special.

With the Oscars coming up, I should point out he’s got one.

He won it for his movie “Once” and it’s one of the best Oscar speeches of all time with a great assist from Jon Stewart. For Kansas City, a city with an insanely huge St. Patrick’s Day parade and celebration, to land a Glen Hansard gig the week of St. Pat’s, I’m not sure it gets any sweeter than that.

If you like your music with a touch of folk, some indie rock, drenched in emotions with a touch of an Irish brogue, this show is for you. Last time through he had a 10-piece band with him and a horn section, naturally, it made my favorite shows of the year list. Start the weekend early on Thursday night at The Truman with the great Glen Hansard and then just keep it rolling all weekend through the parade.
