Last week we featured some shows to catch as January came to an end and as February fired up. This week we have the full February concert calendar for you. Like always, it’s jam packed with 100 plus great musical options for you to see this month.

There are several highlights of course, but the TOP of my list for the month is the Kansas City Folk Festival on Sunday, February 18. The Folk Fest is part of an amazing organization called the Folk Alliance International. This is the third annual festival and the past two events have gone on to be included in my Top Shows of 2016 and 2017 lists, most notably last year’s amazing show with the mighty and powerful songwriter, Billy Bragg. It’s an amazing experience and you shouldn’t miss it. Read more about it below! See you out there at a show.

02/07 Tyler, The Creator/Vince Staples at The Midland

Two of the biggest names in hip hop are returning to The Midland this week: Tyler, The Creator and Vince Staples. Tyler, The Creator recently sold out The Truman and played what some called “an epic set” and Vince Staples was here for Middle of the Map Fest in 2016, a few months before the world found out about him from a video that went viral. Staples’ 2017 album, “Big Fish Theory,” was on several Best Of 2017 lists, including mine. Several feel he was snubbed a Grammy nomination, including himself. I read somewhere, I think on Twitter that he thought his album should’ve been nominated for Best Hip Hop album, Best Alternative album and Best Electronic album. Seeing this album come together live at The Midland should make for a great night.

02/18 2018 Kansas City Folk Festival 10AM-5PM at The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center

Click HERE to watch fest headliner Mary Chapin Carpenter play a song at Farm Aid

Perhaps you’ve been to a big summer festival like Coachella, Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza. You run around, trekking miles across fields in 100 degrees weather. Now imagine this, what if there was a fest that happened ALL inside of a hotel and you moved from stage to stage, ballroom to ballroom, and there were chairs and you’re not dripping sweat. Add to that, it’s family friendly, there’s free parking, musicians from all around the world are there, it’s right in the heart of downtown KC, has music on four stages and is only $30. Wait, I forgot to mention you won’t have to stay up all night either; it runs from 10AM to 5PM with the festival headliner, Mary Chapin Carpenter going on stage at 4PM.

Do you know Mary Chapin Carpenter? Her new album “Sometimes Just The Sky” comes out March 30, 2018. She’s sold over 12 million albums, she’s got about a half dozen Grammys, she’s in the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame -- she’s done it all. And you can see her and 20+ other musicians all for only $30. Head to their website for a full schedule and all the info you need to know about the third annual Kansas City Folk Festival.

I’m telling you this, it will be one of the musical highlights of 2018 if you attend!

02/20 Ani DiFranco/Gracie and Rachel at The Madrid

Click HERE to watch Ani DiFranco play a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR’s Bob Boilen

Since 1990 Ani DiFranco has released nearly 20 solo studio albums. 20! Needless to say she’s a prolific songwriter and in this current political climate she’s singing from stage every night what a lot of us are thinking as we read and watch the news everyday. I’ve seen her play about a dozen times and recently had the chance to meet her, I was totally fanboying over her and finally walked up to her and thanked her for making music.

This will be her first time she plays The Madrid. I love that room and for her style of music it’s going to make for an amazing night. Throw on your best political tee, grab your friends that you marched with at a recent protest and head to midtown to catch another memorable concert from one of my favorite songwriters.

02/21 Talib Kweli at The Riot Room

Click HERE to watch one of hip hops great anthems by Talib Kweli

Talib Kweli’s set at Middle of the Map Fest in 2016 was one of my favorite sets I’ve seen at the Fest in it’s seven year history. It felt like the history of hip hop in one 40 minute set. He’s been a trailblazer in the genre, he was one half of Black Star (along with Mos Def) and his work has inspired a new generation of hip hop acts. And also, he’s a really good guy. At Middle of the Map he sat side stage during De La Soul and sang along, just like all of the fans in crowd at CrossroadsKC behind Grinders. This time through Talib Kweli is playing the very intimate setting of The Riot Room. If he rolls in there with the same energy as he had at Middle that place may erupt.

02/23 Mardi Gras KC 2018 at El Torreon with Hi-Lux hosted by Social Heart

Click HERE to watch Julia Haile of Hi-Lux show off her amazing voice

Have you heard of Social Heart? It’s a KC-based charity organization that works with different charities in KC to raise money for them by throwing fundraiser events on their behalf. It’s current project is a huge Mardi Gras celebration at El Torreon at Martini Corner at 3101 Gillham Plaza. The event includes all you can drink wine, drinks and beer from The Big Rip Brewing Company.

The celebration includes performances by Quixotic - who have toured the world, DJ Ashton Martin - who always throws a good party - and then there’s Hi-Lux, one of the best new bands in KC. The project is fronted by Julia Haile, formerly of The Good Foot. Over the summer they stole the show at Boulevardia and recently put out a brand new EP. I shared their newest single, “Dance With My Baby” on my radio show, the Eight One Sixty on 90.9 The Bridge a couple weeks ago. It sounds like a Jackson 5 B-side from decades ago. Grab your dancing shoes, a mask, some beads and all of your friends and party it up for a good cause on Friday night, February 23. All money raised for the event goes to The Love Fund For Children. The organization works to improve the quality of life for children from birth to 18, and they’ve been around for 30 years.
