We’re about to wave buh-bye to January and the 2018 calendar is already so full of great shows. Late last week Elton John announced a farewell tour with a show here in KC and just yesterday Kevin Hart, Primus and Mastodon, Frank Turner and Menzingers, Chromeo, and Rostam (formerly of Vampire Weekend) all announced Kansas City dates. Plus, if you like country music about 35 shows were announced last week. It’s a crazy way to begin the new year.

Did you catch the Grammys last night? Nope? It looks like most people missed it; the viewer ratings were down 24% from last year! Here’s the full list of winners if you’re interested. I was happy that LCD Soundsystem, The National, Aimee Mann, Jason Isbell, Leonard Cohen (RIP), and Kendrick Lamar all won.

Ok, what’s up this week? Here’s some shows for you to check out.

02/02 The Architects / Hipshot Killer at The Brick

Click HERE to watch an oldie but a goodie from The Architects.

Happy First Friday to you. After you’ve finished strolling The Crossroads and need a drink, a bite to eat and have your face melted off, this show’s for you. It’s two of my favorite KC bands on the same bill on the same night. The Architects are long time stalwarts of the KC music scene and always put on a great show, and Hipshot Killer put out one of my favorite albums of 2016, “They Will Try and Kill Us All.” I’ve listened to it an embarrassing amount of times. Grab you ear plugs and your friends who want to rock and make sure you catch this show on Friday at The Brick.

02/02 Soul Revival/Love, Mae C/Jay Sol/DAHIL at Revolution Records - FREE

As I mentioned above, it’s First Friday week and this record shop in The Crossroads District is hosting a great free show. The shop is nestled behind the giant stage behind Grinders at 19th and Locust. I’ve seen the name Love, Mae C popping up on a lot of shows lately but I haven’t gotten the chance to see her perform -- until this past Friday night. She was part of the incredibly fun show Beastie Boys tribute show at Voodoo Lounge. Love, Mae C jumped on stage with KC hip hop act, Pistol Pete, and stole the spotlight as she showed off her hip hop and neo-soul prowess. It’d be great to see her play a set of her own music and hear songs from her album, “Warning Signs of True Love”.

02/03 Sara Swenson/Jake Wells at recordBar

Click HERE to watch Sara Swenson sing her beautiful song “Welcome To The Family”

Sara Swenson has been one of my favorite KC storytellers for a long time. She used to gig around town a lot but these days her gigs are few and far between, so don’t miss this chance to catch her. Also, it’s an early set at recordBar, so you can grab some dinner while you enjoy her singer/songwriter sounds. Sara plays a blend of ethereal folk-pop songs, and she’s had some TV placements with her music in the past that allowed her the opportunity to do some touring over the years. She also spent some time living in Europe, right as The Royals were getting really hungry and starting make a run toward the postseason, which is when she penned the great song, “Good Boys Win.” Give it a listen.

02/03 I Heart Local Music presents Vibralux/Drugs & Attics/Eems/Cuee at The Bottleneck - FREE

Click HERE to watch a very short film about KC looping musician, Eems

Sometimes you’re out at a show and stumble across a musician and know from the first few notes that you’re going to have a great night. The first time I saw Eems on stage I instantly became a fan. Eems’ music background started in hip hop but transitioned to becoming a looping artist utilizing the ukulele. There’s still some hip hop in there and plenty of R&B vibes too. He also leads drumlines and sometimes they show up at his show, along with confetti cannons and a whole bunch of smiling faces. He’s won crowds over at TEDxKC at The Kauffman Center, Boulevardia and The Plaza Art Fair, just to name a few. He’s a great performer and everyone at The Bottleneck on Saturday is going to have a fun time dancing along to music from Eems.

02/05 MØ/Cashmere Cat at The Truman

Click HERE to watch MØ’s video for her massive hit, “Nights With You”

I always love reading the genre tab on an artist’s or band’s Facebook page. If you look up MØ it says, “Electronic Soul, Street-vibe Indie Pop” - I like it. Her real name is Karen Marie Aagaard Ørsted Andersen, so yeah, she shortened it and used a letter that’s impossible to find on my keyboard. She’s a Danish electronic pop star and I was lucky to see her perform in Austin at SXSW years ago, so when I saw this show announcement I was excited. Also on the bill is Cashmere Cat who seems to sell out every time he comes through town. This show should be quite the dance party at KC’s newest venue in the East Crossroads, at The Truman.
