One of my friends was going to the Plaza early this morning to buy a tax-free computer.

Today through Sunday is Missouri's annual tax free weekend.

Here's the scoop from Joyce Smith, a biz reporter at the Star:

- The sales tax holiday waives state sales tax of 4.225 percent on certain purchases of clothing, school supplies and computer equipment.

- Some cities also are waiving their sales taxes during the event so savings can near 10 percent in some locales, even enticing non-back-to-school shoppers to go on spending sprees.

- Municipalities that will still collect city taxes this weekend include: North Kansas City, Oak Grove, Platte City, Platte Woods, Riverside and Sugar Creek.

Tax-exempt items

Clothing up to $100

School supplies up to $50 per purchase

Computer software up to $350

Personal computers up to $3,500

Computer peripheral devices costing up to $3,500

Personally, I was aghast when I saw this because I was unaware of thecomputer/software aspect.

Lower income folks can save $4.22 on $100 worth of their kids' clothes. Whoo-hoo. But if you buy your kid a computer for $3500, you can save $147.85 ! Or DOUBLE that if you buy them a bunch of crap to go with it.

Are we really helping anyone? I'm sure the states could actually use the money.
