Meet American Idol's fourth judge: Kara DioGuardi.

Who?
She's a Grammy-nominated songwriter who - surprise! - wrote songs that Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, David Cook and a bunch of other Idols sang.
She's responsible for songs like Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl," Ashlee "I lip-synced this on SNL" Simpson's "Pieces of Me" and a TON of teen songs.
“With Kara by her side, Paula has some backup and now there is going to be a lot more ‘girl power’ on the show,” Mike Darnell, president of alternative programming at Fox, told the AP.
Yep, he seriously said that...
Oh yeah - and this fourth judge thing was planned all along! (Even though it only took 8 seasons to execute the plan...)
From the AP story: Executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz said a fourth judge isn’t a new idea.
“We had originally intended for ‘American Idol’ to have four judges,” she said. “We’ve seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers.”
Mmm-hmmm....
