The frontman for local countryesque group Adam Lee & the Dead Horse Sound Company offers up 10 songs that have captured his attention as of late.

“Still Doing Time” by George Jones

“This is a beautifully heartbreaking honky-tonk number, with tragically resigned lines like ‘The ocean of liquor I drank to forget her is gonna kill me, but I’ll drink till then.’ ”

“On the Other Hand” by Randy Travis

“This is the first song, and my favorite, off of one of my favorite country records, ‘Storms of Life.’ Clever premise and a great voice.”

“Bent” by The Calamity Cubes

“This was one of the fist Cubes songs I heard. A great tragic murder ballad and a great display of Brook’s (Blanche) vocals. I still listen to it constantly.”

“High Lonesome” by Joshua P. James and the Paper Planes

“This is the final track of the band’s debut. Strong songs throughout, but this is a wonderfully haunting display of James’ songwriting talent.”

“Too Many Nights in a Roadhouse” by Junior Brown

“Brown is one of my favorite more recent honky-tonk singers. This song is a great display of his vocal strengths and is quite relatable, especially if you live in midtown.”

“Elvis the Lion” by The Harmed Brothers

“The Harmed Brothers are a band lucky enough to have not one but two fantastic songwriters on board. This is a moodier track off of their newest record that gets me every time.”

“Go Easy” by Lucero

“This is my favorite track off of their new album. A slower number, with a huge chorus that reminds me of a gospel song, choir and all.”

“These Days (I Barely Get By)” by George Jones

“This is the classic ‘I lost my truck, I lost my dog’ country song stereotype. Somehow it manages to escape cliché; I think it’s Jones’ voice. Man, that guy can sing.”

“Motel Time Again” by Johnny Paycheck

“Many people think of ‘Take This Job and Shove It’ regarding Johnny Paycheck, but the earlier Little Darlin’ recordings are some of his best. Lloyd Green also plays one of my favorite steel guitar intros on this song.”

“I’m Down to My Last Cigarette” by K.D. Lang

“This song was just introduced to me a few nights ago. A powerful and crooning vocal performance and a song that reminds me of classic Texas honky-tonk.”
