a lull, deleted scenes

10 p.m. thursday. replay lounge.

A Bruce Springsteen song has rarely sounded as artfully gauzy as A Lull’s wispy rendition of “I’m on Fire.” The recently released cover version of the hit by the Boss serves as a reminder of why the Chicago-based indie rock band was a favorite at Ink’s inaugural Middle of the Map festival in 2011. The music of the melodic shoe-gazers is reminiscent of a decidedly less aggressive version of Arcade Fire. Deleted Scenes, a like-minded act from Washington D.C., opens the show, which starts at 10 p.m. Tickets are $2.

shelby lynne

8 p.m. friday. folly theater.

The country music establishment frowns upon nonconformists. Although she is blessed with good looks and a staggeringly soulful voice, Shelby Lynne has spent much of her career behaving like a proverbial square peg. She’s simply unwilling to squeeze into the same round hole that made contemporaries like Faith Hill and Martina McBride superstars. Lynn’s music, consequently, is most appreciated by devoted music aficionados. Bill Shapiro is one such man. The host of the long-running specialty radio program “Cyprus Avenue” is bringing Lynne to the Folly Theater to present his listeners with an “opportunity to get to know one of the toughest, most honest and moving artists around.” Shapiro gives a pre-concert talk at 7 p.m. Tickets to the 8 p.m. concert range from $29 to $50.

nnenna freelon

8 p.m. saturday. folly theater.

The ongoing artistic vitality of jazz is too often obscured by the music’s towering history. Casual listeners would be forgiven for thinking that all the good stuff has already come and gone. Yet there’s no reason to wax nostalgic about the likes of Ella Fitzgerald as long as Nnenna Freelon is still tearing it up. Even though she’s fresh and entirely up-to-date, the six-time Grammy nominee is the type of jazz vocalist that many assume no longer exists. She’s a superlative entertainer with an expressive voice, and her career serves as living proof of the continued relevance of jazz. Tickets to the 8 p.m. concert range from $18 to $50 in advance.

billy joe shaver

8:30 p.m. sunday. knuckleheads.

There’s one in every crowd,” Billy Joe Shaver will sing Sunday at Knuckleheads. “Why does it always have to be me?” The revealing line from Shaver’s “Honky Tonk Heroes,” a song that became a hit for Waylon Jennings, explains much of the Texas troubadour’s appeal. Shaver, one of country music’s most ornery outlaws, continues to burnish his legacy into his 70s. Although he has become a regular at Knuckleheads, fans continue to pack the roadhouse for each of Shaver’s celebratory appearances. It’s not every day that music fans have a chance to catch a living legend. And his music will continue to play even after he’s gone. As the title of his best-known song puts it, Shaver is going to “Live Forever.” Tickets to the 8:30 p.m. show are $22.50 in advance.

the civil wars, the staves

8 p.m. tuesday. liberty hall.

The exquisite folk-rock duo The Civil Wars was on the fast track to stardom even before the act collaborated with Taylor Swift on the young icon’s latest release. “Safe & Sound,” a somber ballad from the forthcoming film “Hunger Games,” should rightfully speed the ascension of the prodigiously gifted duo from Tennessee. The Civil Wars’ take on memorable material like “Barton Hollow” made its sold out show at Crosstown Station last June one of the best concerts of 2011. Similarly stunning harmonies are also the stock in trade of The Staves. The promising British trio opens. The concert starts at 8 p.m. and is officially sold out.
