Favorite coffee shop: “The Filling Station is my neighborhood hangout. Their toddy coffee is stronger and more flavorful than regular iced coffee. They have a lot of variety — fresh juices, sandwiches, quiche and pastries. It used to be a garage, which gives it a good charm, and there is a lot of natural light. I wish they had more power outlets for my laptop, though.”
Breakfast place: “Room 39 is cozy and inviting, while still remaining upscale. They have a great bacon hash, which is comforting and delicious. I like to come here alone and read the newspaper or a book, and I find it very nonintrusive. The staff is nice without being imposing.”
Place to go for a walk: “One of my favorite things to do is go hiking at Weston Bend State Park. When you get to the top of the bluffs, there is a beautiful view of farmland and the Missouri River. There are great rugged paths. It’s nice to live in the center of the city and yet still be so close to nature.”
Asian grocery store: “One of my favorites is Hung Vuong Market because they have rows upon rows of really interesting foods. The last time I was there I saw a box of live blue crabs, which I haven’t seen since I lived in Washington, D.C. They have a huge selection of sauces, noodles and cookies.”
