My Kansas City: Katie Gilchrist, Crossroads Arts District
Katie Gilchrist for My Kansas City
YJ’s Snack Bar
128 W. 18th St.
Gilchrist feels lucky to live near this little dive. She is a regular for soda, and she recently popped in at 1 a.m. with her boyfriend for a curious combo of blueberry pie and bacon.
The Living Room Theatre
1818 McGee St.
“Theater is sexy,” Gilchrist says. “This is the most exciting theatrical event in town.” Gilchrist is a founding company member, a space known for its unconventional performances, cozy atmosphere and comfy seating.
Manifesto
1924 Main St.
Gilchrist reluctantly shared her favorite spot for a romantic night out at this reservations-only bar, reminiscent of a speakeasy. It’s in the basement of the Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange, where artisan cocktails are crafted by candlelight with care.
Czar Bar
1531 Grand St.
Not only does she act, she sings. Catch Gilchrist crooning here from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Thursday nights. But the modest performer says the “flippin’ fantastic” bartenders are really center stage.
Charlotte Street Foundation
1000 W. 25th St.
Charlotte Street is the city’s gem, according to Gilchrist, who was recently excited about a Charlotte Street fellowship for Heidi Van and her theater space, Fishtank Performance Studio, at 18th and Wyandotte streets.

Special to Ink
Katie Gilchrist just took a final bow to close her starring performance in “Everyday Rapture” at the Unicorn Theatre, but she continues to close the curtains at several eating and entertainment haunts in the Crossroads. She is enraptured by the vibrant arts district she calls home. Seeing people out and about on the sidewalks reminds Gilchrist of her time spent in New York, but she prefers barbecue to the Big Apple.
