Ink magazine writers Sarah Gish and Dugan Arnett were honored last month in the Kansas Press Association Awards of Excellence contest.
Gish earned a first-place award in the youth story category for her profile of Joplin-based musician Christofer Drew, and Arnett finished first in the religion writing category for a profile of Westboro Baptist Church heir apparent Megan Phelps-Roper.
Arnett also finished second in the feature writing category.
In all, The Star won 19 first-place awards and 16 second-place honors. The awards were presented last week in Overland Park.
In the Great Plains Journalism Awards announced Friday in Tulsa, Okla., that Arnett took first place in sports features for his Blaine Dalton profile and first in feature writing for the Phelps-Roper profile. Gish won first place in specialty features for her Progressive Pork dining guide.
