Major League Baseball All-Star Week FRIDAY THROUGH NEXT TUESDAY
The gem of Kansas City’s summer events calendar begins this week as one of Major League Baseball’s biggest events rolls into town — and there’s plenty to keep you busy. FanFest, which features dozens of family-friendly attractions as well as autograph opportunities, runs from Friday to Tuesday at Bartle Hall. There’s Monday night’s home run derby (7 p.m.) and a player parade through the Country Club Plaza (1 p.m. Tuesday) prior to Tuesday night’s 7 p.m. game. Plus a collection of All-Star-themed events, including watch parties and free concerts, at various venues throughout the city. For more on the week’s events, including ticket information, turn to Ink’s cover story on page 16.
Jay Mohr SATURDAY
Say this about Jay Mohr: The man certainly has staying power. Despite a lack of high-profile roles, he has held his own over the years. He tussled with Tom Cruise in the 1996 film “Jerry Maguire,” guest-hosted the popular “Jim Rome Show” and most recently spent two years starring in his own sitcom, “Gary Unlimited” on CBS (though it’s no longer on the air). He has also established himself as a pretty good stand-up comedian. He takes the stage at the Midland at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets range from $20 to $30 at midlandkc.com.
Beach House TUESDAY
As the All-Star Game is played at Kauffman Stadium next Tuesday, the indie rock equivalent of the illustrious event will transpire about 45 miles west on Interstate 70 at Liberty Hall. Beach House, the consensus pick among self-consciously fashionable observers as the MVP of 2012, will perform the musical approximation of a home run trot with its gorgeous, dreamy pop. “Bloom,” the Maryland-based duo’s fourth album, is guaranteed a spot on the year-end Top 10 lists of all self-respecting trendy balloteers. Wild Nothing, a New Order-inspired act from Virginia, will bat leadoff.
Tickets to the 8 p.m. show are $20.50 and $25.50.
Friday Night Flicks FRIDAY
All you need is a blanket, lawn chair and a few snacks to enjoy Crown Center’s annual cinema under the stars series, which features a movie a week on a massive outdoor screen. The series kicks off Friday with the 2011 film “Moneyball” starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, both of whom were nominated for Academy Awards for their work in portraying the Oakland Athletics’ improbable rise to power in the early 2000s. The remaining summer schedule is also packed with well-known titles, including the Twilight film “New Moon” (July 13), “Hitch” starring Will Smith (July 20) and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (July 27). All movies are free and start around 9 p.m. in Crown Center Square. crowncenter.com
Death Cab for Cutie
SUNDAY
Ben Gibbard’s solo project-turned full-blown band has enjoyed a steady run of success since it began producing music in the late 1990s. The group has produced seven studio albums, signed with Atlantic Records in 2004 and warranted a number of Grammy nominations in the years since. “Codes and Keys,” the group’s latest album, was nominated for a Best Alternative Music Album this year, and their album “The Open Door EP” earned a nomination in the same category two years earlier. Death Cab stops by CrossroadsKC on Sunday for a 7 p.m. concert at the outdoor venue. Tickets are $40-$46.50 at crossroadskc.com.### More sports 7: KC Command vs. Iowa Barnstormers @ Sprint Center
