Step inside Angela and Nicholas Snyder’s loft and one word comes to mind: Aaahhh.
The smooth cement floors, the clean white countertops and the abundant windows overlooking the River Market give this urban abode a zen-like feel. Which is exactly what this busy couple craves after long days in the office (he’s a consultant, she’s a graphic designer) or in their West Bottoms art studio.
The Snyders fashion robot sculptures out of broken appliances and other objects they rescue from antique malls and junkyards. They sell their so-called Nerdbots at nerdbots.myshopify.com.
“Our studio is the complete opposite of our home,” Angela says.
“There’s just junk everywhere,” Nicholas adds.
Keeping their one-bedroom, 950-square-foot loft clean and uncluttered is fairly easy for the Snyders, who live by a few simple rules:
•When shopping for furniture, buy a few quality pieces you love instead of a bunch of cheap stuff you sort of like.
•Find a place for everything. Even the Snyders’ spatulas have a designated spot in a kitchen drawer.
•Follow the one-in, one-out rule. Every time you bring an object home, give something away. The Snyders usually hand their castoffs to one of Nicholas’ 11 siblings.
Angela’s last rule: Sprinkle in colorful objects that make you happy. For her, that translates to a sunny bowl of oranges in the kitchen, yellow flowers in a vase on the desk, drawings and paintings made by friends and (of course) a Nerdbot or four.
