Pizzabella space in the Crossroads will be taken by Lee's Summit Thai restaurant

After Pizzabella closed in the Crossroads in March, several area restaurant owners were ready to snap up the space for pizza or another cuisine.

But Thai won out.

Doug and Nutnisa Hoffman, owners of Mali Thai Bistro in Lee's Summit, plan an early June opening in the building at 1810 Baltimore Ave.

"We've always liked the area," Doug Hoffman said. "And we've had really great response with our take on Thai food."

Nutnisa is from northeast Thailand and her family owns restaurants in Bangkok and Koh Samui, so their Mali Thai Bistro serves cuisine from several regions. It opened three years ago at 579 S.E. Melody Lane in Lee's Summit

Their new Crossroads operation, Baramee Thai Bistro, will serve a similar menu, including Pad Thai, shrimp rolls, lemongrass beef, pot stickers, Thai cashew nuts, curry, noodles, catfish with a choice of three different sauces (sweet and spicy sam rod, stir-fried red curry, and Thai basil) and fried banana with ice cream.

Pizzabella closed in March after more than a decade of operations. The upscale pizza place faced increased competition from other restaurants in the fast growing Crossroads, including pizza places that offered combo specials — drink, salad and pizza for less than $10.
