It’s the first week of the month so that means it’s time for me to throw 100-plus concerts at you to consider checking out in April.

Concert calendars rise with the outdoor temperature, and as it’s supposed to be getting warmer, the calendar gets that much more crowded. Just the first week of the month offers so many great shows. Have a look below for my highlights of the week.

Also, in case you missed it in the recent snowstorm, it’s baseball season! The Royals are celebrating their 50th year as a franchise. The season is full of great promotions, cool giveaways, and for the eighth year in a row, Ink is teaming up with The Royals to present another season of pre-game concerts.

Every Wednesday home game throughout the season is INK Student Night at The K. With a current student ID you can get $10 tickets and about an hour before the game, you can see a great concert for free on the Outfield Experience Stage. The next concert will feature jazz from the Hermon Mehari Quartet on Wednesday, April 11, at noon, before the 1:15 p.m. game against the Seattle Mariners.

You’ll recognize him as one half of The Black Keys, who played at the Sprint Center to a packed house just a few years ago. Now he’s returning to KC to play The Truman with a new side project that looks really interesting and features a lot of great musical talent. Check out the trailer for their tour above.

Also, can all bands make trailers for their tours? I dig it.

Every March thousands of bands descend upon Austin, Texas, for the South by Southwest music conference with one goal: building awareness for their band. Very few ever emerge and successfully do this, but this year the champion of SXSW may be this band, Pale Waves from Manchester, UK. They filled up venues and became darlings of the festival.

04/06 Julien Baker/Tancred at Granada

Watch her incredibly stripped down and intimate Tiny Desk Concert HERE

Julien Baker has been selling out rooms across the country for a while now and she’s only 22 years old. Recently she landed high on the roster for this year’s uber hip Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

Her music is simple in style, often just her with an electric guitar, but the stories she tells could make the happiest of people quiver in sadness. Watch her Tiny Desk Concert video and you’ll get a glimpse of this as she jokes about the title of a new song, “working title, sad song #11.”

Her style of music is often why music nerds love music — it is the loveliest of gut punches. Grab a friend you can lean on and head to The Granada for an amazing night of songwriting.

We love Tiny Desk Concerts and this is a great one from Lo Moon, watch it HERE

One night I was flipping through the late night shows and stumbled across a band that really caught my attention. The song I was hearing was “Loveless” by Lo Moon, fortunately I found out their name as James Corden wrapped up the segment.

It doesn’t sound like music typically found on late night TV. It’s dark and brooding, with muted vocals and plenty of shoegaze sounds in there. It’s brilliant!

04/08 Durand Jones & the Indication at recordBar

Check out the throwback soul sounds of Durand Jones HERE

undefined

A few years ago the throwback sounds of soul started to fill up the radio airwaves again, on stations like 90.9 The Bridge. Names like Lee Fields and Charles Bradley, older gentleman who were doing their thing for years.

But new projects emerged like St. Paul and the Broken Bones and now Durand Jones & the Indication are here, too. This has all the makings for an early contender for a Best Show of 2018.
