Last month was so packed with great shows that it would seem fair for October to give us a minute to catch our breath. Spoiler: It’s not going to work out that way—October is stacked, too.

I’ve mentioned before that I need a clone to catch all the shows I want to see. This month, there are two must-see shows on Oct. 15 and two more on Oct. 27. Where are the scientists when you need them?

From dark and brooding songwriters like Angel Olsen and Mitski to the confetti and awe of Arcade Fire to the total unknown surrounding Death Grips, check out our highlights below.

10/05 Angel Olsen/Mount Moriah at The Granada

angel olsen

Angel Olsen was born in St. Louis where she was adopted by a foster family that raised her from birth. You’d think she would’ve gigged through KC a lot over the years, but my notes only show her playing one KC show back in 2014 at Riot Room. With three albums under her belt in only five years and a spot on Jagjaguwar Records (home of Bon Iver, Sharon Van Etten and Dinosaur Jr),Olsen has made a name for herself among music fans and critics everywhere. Her 2016 album, “My Woman,” was in the top ten albums of the year according to Paste, Pitchfork, Stereogum and AV Club.

10/15 Pixies/Mitski at The Midland

What a bill. Of course I’m a Pixies fan, but the show got even better when the support was announced. A lot like Angel Olsen above, Mitski had an amazing 2016. Her album “Puberty 2” was featured on top ten albums of the year lists in Paste, Stereogum, AV Club, Time and mine, too. Her breakthrough single, “Your Best American Girl” has a slow, gradual build that could shake an audience from their seats and lead them outside to start a riot. Come early and check out this up-and-comer, and then stay late for the band that you’ve probably loved for a couple decades or more.

10/15 Greensky Bluegrass/Fruition at The Uptown

Greensky Bluegrass

These guys hit my radar when they played Bluegrass in the Bottoms, a great two-day fest in the East Bottoms back in May. These guys packed the house. Well, it was a park, actually, but you get my point. Greensky Bluegrass is from Kalamazoo, Michigan and have been playing their version of bluegrass since 2000. Here’s an interesting bit: Their most recent release, “Shouted, Written Down & Quoted” was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, who has worked with our hometown boys, Making Movies, over the years. If you’re up for a night of stomping and picking, head over to the Uptown.

10/27 Arcade Fire/Bomba Estereo at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena

arcade fire

In 2011 and 2014, Arcade Fire played Starlight Theatre. The Friday before Halloween, they’ll return to KC to play the smallest venue on their tour. In fact, outside of special appearances, it’s the smallest venue they’ve played in several years. If you’ve seen these Canadian rockers in the past, you know their stage show is on another level, incorporating confetti, crazy masks and outfits and even a human disco ball. This show is happening in the round, meaning that the stage is in the center of the arena. Bomba Estereo will kick off the night in Independence.

10/27 Ministry/Death Grips at The Uptown

You guys, Death Grips is coming to KC. I saw them play Lawrence a few summers back. The walls at the Granada were sweating and I’m still trying to figure out everything that happened that night. Their sound is an opaque form of experimental noise-rock and hip hop with MC Ride aggressively leading the way. Zach Hill moves faster on the drums than the kid in “Whiplash,” and Andy Morin ties the madness together via other instruments and samples. If you’re a fan of the extraordinary and long lists of superlatives, this show is for you.
