Hopefully you had a lovely, long holiday weekend filled with music from First Friday shows, Irish Fest, The American Royal and a great run of shows at CrossroadsKC. Well, now it’s time to plan for the rest of this week and it couldn’t be more packed with great shows, big festivals and an amazing display at the Nelson. Let’s start there.

09/08 Quixotic Surfaces: 10 Years of Illumination at The Nelson

Are you familiar with Quixotic? They are an innovative performance art collective fusing imagination with technology, dance, projection mapping and live music to create amazing experiences. They have teamed up with The Nelson-Atkins for a third “Surfaces” performance in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Bloch Building. Quixotic will use projection, choreography and music to honor Bloch Building architect Steven Holl, and shine a new light on this iconic building. I saw the performance on the walls of the museum a few years ago and it blew my mind.

09/08 Buzz Beach Ball, day one: Snoop Dogg/Foster The People/Spoon/Marian Hill/K. Flay/Toadies/Hippo Campus/Irontom/Middle Kids/Lolo/Local H/The Sluts at Providence Medical Center Amphitheater

In 2015 Snoop Dogg delivered the keynote speech at SXSW, the huge music conference in Austin. By the time it was over, my face hurt from laughing at his tales of hanging out with Willie Nelson. No doubt, when he plays in Bonner Springs this weekend everyone will have a great time, too. Make sure you get there early to see Middle Kids, all the way from Sydney, Australia and also The Sluts all the way from Lawrence, Kan.

09/09 Buzz Beach Ball, day two: Weezer/Run The Jewels/Gogol Bordello/Bishop Briggs/Bob Moses/PVRIS/Chicano Batman/The Score/Beach Slang/Yes You Are at Providence Medical Center Amphitheater

Good music transcends genre. What Run The Jewels’ brand of hip hop does in this insane political climate is special. Everyone should see them. Also, make sure you’re there early to see Yes You Are from right here in KC. You may have heard their music in a Pepsi commercial recently —congrats to them!

09/09 Crossroads Music Fest: 40+ bands in venues all around The Crossroads District

This year marks the 13th year for Crossroads Music Fest. I missed the first year but for TWELVE years now CMF has been one of my favorite days of the year. Bill Sundahl, 90.1 KKFI and his crew of volunteers put together a top notch event every year and you get to hear some of KC’s best bands. Recently, Sundahl added in some regional acts. I encourage you to head to grab you tix right now and then start picking out the bands you want to see.

09/12 U2/Beck at Arrowhead

Since this concert is on Tuesday of next week, I wanted to mention it early. This show is bucket list material folks. If you haven’t seen U2 before, you have to be at this show. If you haven’t seen Beck before, you have to be at this show. Quite simply, you have to be at this show. The production will be something like you’ve never seen and you’ll get to be part of a 50,000 person sing along to some of the most iconic songs of all time.
