Echo and the Bunnymen Roger Sargent | ROGER SARGENT

Concert Chris: KC’s newest supergroup, a jazz street fest + more July music

You do realize we’re more than halfway through 2017, right? Crazy. Have you seen more concerts and shows this year than last? If you have some catching up to do, let us offer you a few gems to check out this week.

07/25 Ink presents Violent Femmes and Echo & the Bunnymen at CrossroadsKC

Both of these bands have been at it forever, each for nearly 40 years! When you’re playing music that people love and it still makes them happy decades later, it’s a great thing. Come join the singalong at CrossroadsKC on Tuesday.

07/26 Me Like Bees and Wild Adriatic at The Riot Room

First off: this video -- the result of a happy accident. Me Like Bees recorded a session with 90.9 The Bridge and the audio recorded just fine but the video was filmed and stored on a hard drive that later crashed. Someone had the brilliant idea to replace the band with puppets and this bit of magic was born. Catch Bees and Wild New York-based Adriatic on Wednesday.

07/27 Ensemble Ibérica and Making Movies at RecordBar

This is such an interesting bill and it has the potential for remarkable onstage collaborations. The fascinating world music of Ensemble Iberica and the Latin indie rock of Making Movies will put so many instruments on stage. I won’t know what any of them are called, but I know it will a great and memorable evening.

07/28 Radar State/Archie Powell & The Exports/Scruffy and The Janitors at The Riot Room

We have our own supergroup brewing right here in KC. Radar State is a brand new project featuring Jim Suptic and Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids, Josh Berwanger from Berwanger and Adam Phillips from the Architects. Catch them play their first gig in KC on Friday before they play Riot Fest in Chicago with Nine Inch Nails, Wu-Tang Clan and Jawbreaker in September.

07/29 Phoenix Fest, at Eighth and Central

Everyone loves a good street festival. The 8th annual Phoenix Fest features ten bands with entertainment bouncing back and forth between the inside stage and outside stage. Bring a lawn chair and your friends and hang out for a while. They’ll have food trucks and cold beverages to take care of you.

07/29 Susto and Liza Anne at RecordBar

Susto is a five-piece band of indie rockers out of Charleston and Liza Anne is a deeply pensive singer-songwriter out of Nashville. They’re out on tour together, stopping by the RecordBar on Saturday night. Stop by and enjoy a night of all the feels and try some of that great RecordBar pizza.
