Concert Chris: Lawrence Field Day Fest + more July music
It’s a full week here in KC. Have a look below and see what you think. And please share this with your other music-loving friends.
07/13 to 07/15 Lawrence Field Day Fest 6 100+ bands in venues all over Lawrence
I love community festivals with great KC and Lawrence bands and this fest has more than 100 of them. It’s the sixth annual Lawrence Field Day Fest and it’s the biggest yet, running Thursday through Saturday. You can grab a ticket for just one day or for the full three days so come when you can and leave when you must. Check out the Facebook page for ticketing info and a schedule of all the bands.
You might not know her name, but if you’re a music nerd maybe you know of her former band, Paper Bird from Denver. She has a few records of her own under her belt now, including 2016’s “We Were Wild,” which earned an invitation to record her very own Tiny Desk Concert for Bob Boilen and NPR Music. She has a bit of an edge like St. Vincent, but with more catchy hooks like Regina Spektor.
Did you know that we’re home to the 2013 Air Guitar World Champion, Eric “Mean” Melin? Melin is hosting the organization’s semifinals at RecordBar on Saturday, with competitors from Austin, Houston, Denver, South Dakota, Lawrence, and Des Moines, along with some hometown heroes. Cheer them on here in KC before the winners advance to the finals in Finland. I assure you that your face will hurt from laughing.
What’s better than a four band bill featuring Various Blonde and power-pop trio Deco Auto? The chance to see them while checking out a new venue. The Rino, which stands for river north, is connected to the Colony, a very hip coffee shop in North Kansas City.
Perhaps you saw UK rockers Wolf Alice when they played Harverster’s Fed Up Fest at CrossroadsKC in 2015. Now you can catch them in the more intimate setting of The Riot Room. Led by frontwoman Ellie Rowsell, expect to follow a synth-filled path that will have you lost in your own head. Fire up the smoke machine and see what happens.
